Asian BBQ @ Prangin Mall, Penang

Hmm… after experience eaten New Zealand Beef Shabu-shabu, feeling like this BBQ meal is similar.

But it’s added with grill and not only steamboat.

This Asian BBQ's Personal Meal Set is RM10.8, inclusive of 10% service charge.

Each set includes:

Thin Sliced Pork, Homemade Meat Balls, Udon Noodles, Shitake Mushroom, Cabbage, Carrot, A Bowl of Rice, and Clear soup base.

Homemade sauce using fresh ingredients.

Mainly 4 ingredients to make this special sauce, which is garlic and small chili, another 2 types…secret…u try it out then u’ll know.

The ingredient on the right is pork fat, will use it later.

Or u can dip with the simple small chili with soya sauce.

Is mainly for those who likes spicy.

Asked the staff how to use and how to eat, these steps are 1 of the ways to eat it.

First, after the soup was prepared and boiled, put in the vegetables and mushroom. Let the soup can taste fresh and sweet with the vege.

Then, using the pork fat to brush the metal skillet to ensure the oil is on the surface.

So that the pork meat wouldn’t stick on it after cook.

Using chopstick put piece by piece the pork meat.

Quite hard to the beginner, because it’s thin layer like a cloth only.

After that, use spoon scoop the hot soup and slowly pour on the meat.

If the hot soup is hot enough, only pour 1x enough to make the raw meat to been cooked.

After the staff showed how to cook, it’s time for me to cook, but end up… no time to eat and cooked all the ingredient only.

Is nice try.

After finish this meal, u might need some beverage to cool down ur body… suggest u take this Herbs Drink (Cold) RM3.70 (人参凉茶), or hot RM3.50

Tasty and slightly bitter

Overall the taste is so-so if u didn’t dip with the special sauce. But after u dip the special sauce, it’s so fantastic and appetizing ur stomach.

The pricing is consider reasonable because BBQ rarely got low price, except u can find a offer price.

Food variety over here is looks standard, it’s mean that they didn’t offer much variety of food.

Environment is clean and bright. Is good place for steamboat with air-cond.

The service is hospitality and friendly.

Few highlight here…

• Self-cooking Mongolian-Japanese style barbecue restaurant.

• Meal accompanied by specially prepared sauce for grilled food.

• Strategically located in Prangin Mall complex, convenient for dining & shopping under one roof.

• Ample of car parks available.

Some reviews:

• Few Asian BBQ focuses on the selection of best-quality meats and fresh vegetables where customers can experience self-grilling.

• In pre-war Japan, it is believed that the Mongolian soldiers cook their food on their metal helmets, hence the idea of Mongolian-Japanese style BBQ whereby the cooking is made on a dome-shaped convex metal skillet and steamboat at the side. Such cooking experience makes dining at Asian BBQ enjoyable and mesmerizing.

• The meal is also accompanied by specially prepared sauce, which tastes just right for grilled food.

Rojak @ Kulim Town, Kulim

Rojak is 1 of the most famous food in Malaysia.

It’s fruit and vegetable salad dish, but it mix with sweet and sour prawn/shrimp paste (虾膏, belacan) with a bit spicy taste.

@ Kulim, am always buying Rojak from this uncle, after tasting so many other stalls and this 1 still the best.

This uncle comes with 1 motorbike and his wife is helping him.

This uncle always ask in Hokkien… Ai Hiam Mai (means do u want spicy) & Ga Liao Ai? (means all in)

What fruits and vegetables inside?

Cucumber, Pineapple, Raw Mangoes, SengKuang, Guava, You-Tiao (Cut-up Chinese-style Fritters), and Keropok (虾饼)

Got 2 portion:

Small - RM2.20

Big - RM3.00 (I always choose the big portion)

** There’s drive-thru available because it’s on the road side, but not recommended because it’ll caused traffic jam.

Along this road got few variety of foods. The environment is so-so.

Kedai Kopi Choy On Yoon (财安园茶室) @ Menglembu, Ipoh

In the past, every hour in the afternoon sharp, u’ll see crowded standing near the kitchen waiting to buy the Bao (Cantonese bun).

Is not giving for free, but most of the customers can wait until the Bao can be sold.

The Bao Sifu (Master / Expert Bao maker) can control when’s the right timing to steam the Bao and find the best of the best ingredients to be used.

But it’s over, no such scenery can be seen anymore.

By rumors, the Bao Sifu was left and reopen at the other restaurant after some argument with the son of boss.

End up, both places that sell the Bao was not delicious anymore.

There’re variety of Bao in this shop. The common Bao that u can see in DimSum restaurant is Cha Siu Bao (or Char Siu Bao is a Cantonese barbecue-pork-filled bun, Mandarin pronoun it as BaoZi).

The best Bao skin is soft, think layer and it won’t stick in your mouth when u are chewing the food before swallow. Although u didn’t drink water (or any beverage), you still can swallow the Bao skin gently.

Besides that, the best Barbecued Pork filling is not overcook or too fat.

The paste also important to make the Bao perfect, it should be not too sweet or watery.

That day just bought Curry Chicken Bao, RM1.50 and Kaya Bao, RM1.30

…taste awful if u eat after few hours. sticky and smells disgusting.

Although the Bao in this shop is not the best anymore, but the Wantan Mee quality still maintain.

…never seen Wantan Mee stall with so many ingredients on the counter.

The Barbecued Pork meat is well cook, Wantan is big size like a PingPong, tempting dumplings (饺子) with lots of filling, and finally the Wantan Mee is chewy and mix with black soya sauce.

Jalan Tok Ungku Pasar Malam @ Seremban

This “Pasar Malam” (night market along the street) is consider the longest / biggest in Seremban.

Generally, Pasar Malam is a place for u to buy local foods and other stuff in lower price.

I had went this Pasar Malam before, but the only food that always flashing in my mind is Taiwanese Style Vegetable Salad Popiah.

It’s special compare with others. In Seremban, normally they’ll use darker brown Sengkuang (which is overcook and adding with soya sauce) as ingredient for Poppiah, and flooded with sauce. While Ipoh Poppiah style is using cooked Sengkuang (in white color), and dry. This Taiwanese Poppiah is solid and dry. It’s using raw Sengkuang and mix with other vegetables, wrap with Seaweed. That’s why it’s so crunchy. To make it more tasty, added with Thousand Island Dressing… always make me mouth-watering whenever I think it again and again.

Vegetable Salad Popiah (台式蔬菜沙拉薄饼)

4 types of Popiah u can choose:

1. Vegetable Salad Popiah (蔬菜沙拉薄饼), RM2.10 per roll

2. Vegetable Salad Chicken Floss Popiah (蔬菜沙拉肉丝薄饼), RM2.60 per roll

3. Vegetable Salad Seaweed Popiah (蔬菜沙拉紫菜薄饼), RM2.80 per roll

4. Vegetable Salad Chicken Floss Seaweed Popiah (蔬菜沙拉肉丝紫菜薄饼), RM3.30 per roll

We only decided to choose #2 and #3, both also nice and different taste (口感),

Here is some Popiah ingredients:

Fried pork oil or flour, chicken floss

Raw Sengkuang, Corn seeds, Seaweed

Lettuce, Raw Sengkuang

As u can see, extraordinary way to prepare the Popiah… because they received too much ordered.

Besides that, Pasar Malam also selling other types of food, such as Nyonya Zongzi.

Thought I can buy it for tomorrow breakfast, but unfortunately it had been eaten by others before me.

So try it again next time.

The landmark for this Pasar Malam is Restoran Wing Heong, tallest building compare the rest.
